LOS ANGELES, July 2002 - The board and staff of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and Honorary Chairman Viggo Mortensen are pleased to announce the 23rd Annual Benefit Art Auction for Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, an interdisciplinary contemporary visual arts center located in the heart of Hollywood. Outstanding contemporary artwork, contributed by some of the most important artists working today, will be available and promise to make the most nonchalant collector greedy! Offered are original works in watercolor by Ross Bleckner and Andrea Zittel, one-of-a-kind drawings by Ingrid Calame and Mark Licari, a brand new collage by Larry Johnson, recent paintings by Sally Elesby, and Monique Van Genderen, prints by Robert Indiana and Ed Ruscha, and so much more (a full list of participating artists is included below). And, just in case this is not enough, a limited edition print by Raymond Pettibon, made expressly for Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions' benefit in an edition of 100, will be available at a steal -- only $200! This pre-eminent event is a highlight on the calendars of contemporary art collectors nation-wide. Banana Republic, a consistent supporter of contemporary art, will sponsor this not-to-be-missed gala affair for the second year in a row. Approximately 45 works of art will be auctioned live by a Sothebys auctioneer on Tuesday 17 September 2002. Doors will open at 6:30 pm at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions for art viewing, cocktails, and heavy hors d'oeuvres. The live auction will begin at 8:00 pm and will be held next door at club sixteen-fifty. Viggo Mortensen, an artist, poet, and well-known actor, is the events chairman as well as a contributing artist. The Annual Benefit Art Auction itself is a lively social event in which approximately 300 art patrons, collectors, gallery owners, and other professionals mingle with many of the artists whose works are available. Themed around "Hollywood" and the range of experiences our neighborhood offers, the auction will spin off the glamorous side of Hollywood -- synonymous with the entertainment industry -- while getting down and dirty with its vibrant yet seedy reality. Older established businesses as well as businesses new to the area are contributing to this event. No guest will leave empty handed. Gift bags themed around "How to Survive in Hollywood" will feature a variety of fun items including temporary tattoos, beauty treatments, discount cards to American Cinematheque movie tickets, a little something sexy, the latest issue of Flaunt magazine and other Hollywood necessities. Raffle items include a designer dress by successful local designer Claire Joseph, a group tour to Hollywood Forever Cemetery, dinner for two at the beautiful, newly-designed Hollywood and Vine Diner, accommodations at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel, and more. There will be live music, a hosted bar and a plentiful array of enticing hors doeuvres from neighboring Hollywood restaurants. Guests will be invited to relax immediately following the live auction in a lounge-like setting that simulates the grooviest aspects of Hollywood nightlife throughout the eras. The full list of participating artists includes Ellen Birrell, Ross Bleckner, Ingrid Calame, Jo Ann Callis, Greg Colson, Robbie Conal, Eileen Cowin, Martin Cox, Tony Cragg, Steven Criqui, Jacci den Hartog, Sean Duffy, Sally Elesby, Judy Fiskin, Robbert Flick, Llyn Foulkes, Dara Friedman, Francesca Gabbiani, Marcelino Goncalves, Wade Guyton, Christopher Haun, Robert Indiana, Larry Johnson, Konstantin Kakanias, Seth Kaufman, Mark Licari, Robert Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Joseph Maruska, Viggo Mortensen, Dwayne Moser, Rene Norman, Stas Orlavski, Michael Perelman, Jason Rogenes, Ed Ruscha, Kenny Scharf, Mindy Shapero, Alyson Shotz, Thaddeus Strode, Kunie Sugiura, Stephanie Taylor, Hung Tran, Monique Van Genderen, Paulina Wallenberg-Olsson, and Andrea Zittel.
