LOS ANGELES, July 2002
- The board and staff of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions
and Honorary Chairman Viggo Mortensen were pleased to announce the
23rd Annual Benefit Art Auction for Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions,
an interdisciplinary contemporary visual arts center located in
the heart of Hollywood. Outstanding contemporary artwork, contributed
by some of the most important artists working today, was available
and promised to make the most nonchalant collector greedy! Offered
were original works in watercolor by Ross Bleckner
and Andrea Zittel, one-of-a-kind drawings by
Ingrid Calame and Mark Licari, a brand
new collage by Larry Johnson, recent paintings
by Sally Elesby, and Monique Van Genderen,
prints by Robert Indiana and Ed Ruscha,
and so much more (a full list of participating artists is included
below). And, just in case this was not enough, a limited edition
print by Raymond Pettibon, made expressly for Los
Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions' benefit in an edition of 100,
was available at a steal -- only $200! This pre-eminent event was
a highlight on the calendars of contemporary art collectors nation-wide.
Banana Republic, a consistent supporter of contemporary art, sponsored
this not-to-be-missed gala affair for the second year in a row.
Approximately 45 works
of art were auctioned live by a Sothebys auctioneer on Tuesday
17 September 2002. Doors opened at 6:30 pm at Los Angeles Contemporary
Exhibitions for art viewing, cocktails, and heavy hors d'oeuvres.
The live auction began at 8:00 pm and was held next door at club
sixteen-fifty. Viggo Mortensen, an artist, poet, and well-known
actor, was the events chairman as well as a contributing artist.
The Annual Benefit Art
Auction itself is a lively social event in which approximately 300
art patrons, collectors, gallery owners, and other professionals
mingled with many of the artists whose works are available. The
23rd Annual Benefit Art Auction themed around "Hollywood"
and the range of experiences our neighborhood offers, the auction
spun off the glamorous side of Hollywood --synonymous with the entertainment
industry -- while getting down and dirty with its vibrant yet seedy
reality. Older established businesses as well as businesses new
to the area contributed to this event. No guest left empty handed.
Gift bags themed around "How to Survive in Hollywood" featured a
variety of fun items including temporary tattoos, beauty treatments,
discount cards to American Cinematheque movie tickets, a little
something sexy, the latest issue of Flaunt magazine and other Hollywood
necessities. Raffle items included a designer dress by successful
local designer Claire Joseph, a group tour to Hollywood Forever
Cemetery, dinner for two at the beautiful, newly-designed Hollywood
and Vine Diner, accommodations at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel,
and more. There was live music, a hosted bar and a plentiful array
of enticing hors doeuvres from neighboring Hollywood restaurants.
The full list of participating
artists is as follows: Ellen Birrell, Ross Bleckner, Ingrid Calame,
