Lot 11 With unabashedly Surrealist tendencies, Sean Mellyn has created in “Untitled (Birdhouse)” a curious and ambiguous portrait of a young child with a lot on its mind. The image depicts one of his ongoing themes – images of children portrayed with far more complexity and range than we typically see, reflecting the wide range of children’s thoughts and emotions as well as the complicated and sometimes contradictory attitudes adults have toward children. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Mellyn studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and now lives and works in New York City. Since 1994 he has had solo exhibitions around the country, most recently at Roberts & Tilton Gallery in Los Angeles. |
