Describing himself as a “tactical media practitioner”, Daniel Joseph Martinez is an internationally exhibiting artist who lives and works on the west bank of the Los Angeles River in downtown Los Angeles. The clean, meticulous craftsmanship of this image is offset by the bold and jarring statement made by the text. Martinez’s work has long been characterized by its effort to open up dialogue on a number of controversial and important subjects – whether race, class, economic, or political issues. A successful work of art for Martinez is not one that garners good reviews and high sales – rather, it is one that presses people to confront and discuss the issues that are all too often overlooked and ignored.
