In Carolyn Castaño’s work, decoration and artifice are used as means to explore gender and femininity. Through the depiction of birds, flowers and nature, Castaño creates a type of pulp fiction to examine the notions of looking, the beauty ritual, and femme aggression. In October, Castaño will participate in a group exhibition entitled “Semi-Precious” at Public Art Fund in New York. Earlier this year her work was seen in solo shows at Lombard-Fried Fine Art in New York and at Kontainer Gallery in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from UCLA in 2001, and currently lives in Los Angeles.
