Through poetry, painting and music, Devendra Banhart has found the means to communicate with an ever-growing audience. Just this July, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions co-hosted a sold-out concert by Banhart for an audience of over 400 people. In describing work in a recent exhibition at CANADA gallery in New York, the New York Times said, “…echoes of Paul Klee, Indian painting and children’s drawings chime together here. Like the psychedelic-folk music for which Mr. Banhart has become well known, the effect is of a spooky sweetness.” Such influences can be seen in the impromptu drawing Banhart produced on the back cover of his book, Light Aligns.
