Lot 21 “The Rotunda” is a kind of gallery of images from sources that have made an imprint on Mike Minelli – including his mother clasping a napkin over her mouth uttering a profanity, a lone airplane with 9/11 associations, and a character from the 1970s television show “The Land of the Lost.” By combining images from both the recent and not-so-recent past, the artist shows how associations between images can change through generations. After studying in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 1993 and 1994, Minelli went on to earn his MFA in Sculpture from UCLA in 1999. A Los Angeles-based artist, Minelli had a solo show at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles earlier this year and has had work in numerous group shows around the United States and in Europe since 1989. |
