A former board member of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Charles Gaines is a multi-disciplinary, Conceptually-based artist whose work was the subject of a traveling survey in 2002 and 2003 mounted at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Luckman Fine Art Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles. His work has been included in significant group exhibitions, including, earlier this year, “Fade (1990-present): African American Artists in Los Angeles, A Survey Exhibition,” organized by Malik Gaines. Christopher Miles wrote in Artforum that Gaines’s “comingl[ed]… images and text abjures foregone conclusions in favor of less tidy dissemations, and in so doing, it trades a quick read and a brief impact for a more sustained ripple in one’s consciousness.”
