Lot 60 In the recent issue of Cakewalk, Andrea Bowers says, “…my work is centered on a specific nonviolent direct action movement that took place during the 1970s and 1980s in the US. Combining feminism, spiritualism and environmentalism… [i]t is my attempt through this body of work, despite my atheism, to remember a group of peoples’ playfulness, their concept of politics as theater, their egalitarian internal process and their utopian vision.” A Los Angeles-based artist, she has had screenings and exhibited extensively nationally and internationally since 1991. She was included in this year’s Whitney Biennial and shows with Sara Meltzer in New York, Mary Goldman Gallery in Los Angeles, and Mehdi Choukri in Berlin, and this month opens a solo show at Magazin 4 Vorarlberger Kunstverein in Austria. |
