SUBMISSIONS

Submission Guidelines:

Programs are determined by Carol Stakenas, Executive Director, who is responsible for the research and development of the organization's programs. An artist is chosen on the basis of the strength of his of her artwork and its capacity to enrich the understanding of the world in which we live; on curatorial estimation of the work shown to stand the test of time; and on curatorial judgement of the artist's ability to continue to produce work of lasting relevance. All exhibitions are accompanied by free brochures and free artist talks. Visits with students at area art schools are arranged for artists who are not from the Los Angeles area.

Curatorial decisions reflect the goals and ideals established by the organization's founders; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions is committed to presenting the most vital contemporary art to its audiences, and to assisting artists in the production of work that is new and untested, in which ideas are cultivated beyond conventional expectations.

As each season's programs are developed, the Executive Director takes into consideration this institution's remarkable history and its current role in this city's contemporary art community. All projects undertaken require a strong conceptual as well as aesthetic foundation. Continuing the legacy of the organization's artist/founders, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions presents work that is ahead of its time - "art made tomorrow," in the words of a founding Director's Council member.

In 1997 the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions agreed to disband the organization's structure of artist/curatorial committees, which made program determinations on the basis of unsolicited submissions. In consideration of this organization's rich history, consideration is still given to unsolicited submissions, though it must be stressed that competition for programs is extremely competitive and virtually all program decisions are made by invitation to artists after numerous studio conversations and visits, rather than by reviewing slides. If, however, an artist remains interested in submitted unsolicited slides, he or she may do so by sending slides and a proposal, statement or other information about his or her work with a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Carol Stakenas, Executive Director
Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions
6522 Hollywood Blvd

All reviewed submissions are returned during June, July, and August.
